Can the mind influence the body’s healing processes in ways science does not yet fully understand?
That question has guided much of the work of Dr. William F. Bengston, a sociologist and researcher who has spent decades investigating an unconventional approach commonly known as the Bengston Energy Healing Method.
Unlike meditation, visualization, prayer, or traditional “positive thinking,” the Bengston Method centers on a mental practice called Image Cycling combined with a hands-on or near-body healing practice.
The method has attracted interest partly because Bengston and collaborators have reported unusual results in laboratory experiments involving cancer models in mice. At the same time, the proposed mechanism remains unknown, and the research has not established the method as a medical treatment for cancer or other diseases in humans.
So what exactly is the Bengston Method, and how is it supposed to work?
The Origins of the Bengston Method
William Bengston began investigating healing phenomena in the 1970s after encountering an individual who claimed an unusual ability to produce healing effects.
Rather than simply accepting the claims, Bengston became interested in testing them experimentally.
Over time, he developed and taught a reproducible mental technique that became known as Image Cycling. Bengston’s goal was unusual for the field of energy healing: instead of assuming that healing depended upon a rare natural gift, he wanted to determine whether ordinary people could learn the process.
His early experiments eventually included laboratory mice implanted with mammary tumors.
In a published study by Bengston and David Krinsley, experimental mice were exposed to healing sessions while control animals were kept separately. The researchers reported unexpectedly high rates of tumor regression and survival in the treated mice. Replication experiments using inexperienced volunteers trained in the technique were also reported.
These findings are intriguing, but they should also be interpreted cautiously. They have not led to the kind of large-scale independent replication and human clinical trials that would be required before the method could be considered an established cancer treatment.
The Core of the Method: Image Cycling
The most distinctive part of the Bengston Method is Image Cycling.
It begins with something surprisingly simple: creating a list of things you would genuinely like to experience in your life.
The items do not necessarily relate to healing.
They might include:
- traveling somewhere meaningful,
- completing an important project,
- enjoying time with family,
- learning something new,
- achieving a personal goal,
- owning something you have always wanted,
- or experiencing a particular moment of happiness or fulfillment.
Each desire is then converted into a vivid mental image representing the goal as though it has already happened.
For example, instead of thinking:
“I would like to visit Italy someday,”
you might create an internal image of yourself standing in Rome, seeing the architecture, feeling the warm air and experiencing the emotions associated with being there.
The images are then memorized.
With practice, the person begins moving rapidly from one image to the next.
Eventually, Bengston describes the process as becoming extremely fast—more like a rapidly spinning mental filmstrip than ordinary visualization. In his published description of Image Cycling, he emphasizes that practitioners eventually attempt to cycle through many mental images in rapid succession without consciously concentrating on any one of them.
Good design is making something intelligible and memorable. Great design is making something memorable and meaningful.

Why Cycle Images So Quickly?
This is where the Bengston Method differs significantly from conventional visualization.
Most visualization techniques ask someone to concentrate intensely on a single desired outcome.
Image Cycling does nearly the opposite.
Once the images have been created and memorized, the practitioner attempts to cycle them so rapidly that conscious attention can no longer dwell on individual images.
The process is practiced repeatedly until it can occur almost automatically in the background while the person performs other activities.
Bengston has compared this to developing an automatic skill.
When someone first learns to drive, play the piano, or ride a bicycle, nearly every movement requires conscious attention. Eventually, much of the activity becomes automatic.
Image Cycling is intended to reach a similar level of automaticity.
Importantly, the practitioner is not supposed to concentrate on the illness being treated while doing this.
That feature challenges the intuitive idea that healing requires mentally “attacking” a disease.
Instead, the method attempts to create a particular mental or physiological state while allowing the healing process—whatever it may be—to operate without conscious direction.


What Happens During a Healing Session?
In Bengston’s experimental work, practitioners have commonly positioned their hands around or near the subject receiving treatment.
The subject may be a person, animal or—as in laboratory experiments—a cage containing mice.
Direct physical contact is not necessarily required.
The practitioner simultaneously maintains the rapid Image Cycling process.
According to Bengston’s model, consciously trying to force healing may actually interfere with the process. The practitioner therefore cycles unrelated images rather than continually thinking:
“Heal this person.”
The underlying idea is that the conscious mind is occupied while another process operates outside ordinary conscious awareness.
Exactly what that process might be remains unresolved.
Is It Really “Energy” Healing?
The term energy healing creates an important scientific problem.
In physics, energy has precise definitions and can ordinarily be measured.
Researchers have not established the existence of a distinct biological healing energy corresponding to what many alternative healing traditions call chi, qi, prana, life force or a biofield.
The National Cancer Institute notes that energy-healing approaches are based on the idea that a vital energy flows through the body, but currently there is insufficient evidence supporting the existence of such proposed energy fields.
For that reason, describing the Bengston Method scientifically requires some care.
There are really two separate questions:
Does something measurable happen?
and
If something happens, what causes it?
Those are not the same question.
A biological effect could theoretically be observed before its underlying mechanism was understood. But extraordinary experimental findings also require rigorous replication before scientists can determine whether an apparent effect is genuine.
The Mouse Cancer Experiments
Bengston’s research became particularly well known because of experiments involving laboratory cancer models.
In the original published experiments, mice with experimentally induced mammary tumors received approximately one hour of healing exposure per day.
The researchers reported an unusual pattern in which tumors developed, enlarged, ulcerated and then apparently regressed. Many of the treated animals reportedly survived far beyond the expected course of the tumor model.
Subsequent research has continued investigating whether measurable biological effects might accompany the method.
More recent experiments have taken a particularly unusual direction.
Rather than requiring a healer to be physically present, researchers attempted to record magnetic signals measured during Bengston Method healing sessions and later expose cancer-bearing mice to those recordings.
A 2020 study using a mouse breast-cancer model found physiological differences between exposed and control animals, including immune-related changes. Tumor growth showed only a trend toward slowing rather than a clear dramatic therapeutic effect. The authors concluded that the exposure appeared capable of generating a biological response but that its effect on tumor growth was limited in that experiment.
Another study published in 2023 tested recorded signals in three different mouse cancer models. Researchers reported significant tumor suppression in one breast-cancer model but not equivalent tumor effects in the melanoma model; the bladder-cancer model could not be properly evaluated because tumors failed to develop as expected.
This mixed pattern is important.
It suggests that the research question is far from settled.
So How Might the Bengston Method Work?
The scientifically accurate answer at present is:
We don’t know.
Several broad possibilities can be considered.
One is that the reported experimental effects eventually prove difficult to reproduce consistently and have conventional methodological or statistical explanations.
Another is that some currently recognized psychological or physiological process—perhaps involving stress regulation, autonomic activity, interpersonal interaction or other biological signaling—contributes to certain observations.
A more speculative possibility proposed by researchers in biofield healing is that biological organisms may interact through subtle forms of electromagnetic or other signaling that have not yet been adequately characterized.
Research on biofield therapies more broadly remains heterogeneous. Reviews have found numerous human studies reporting positive or mixed outcomes, but substantial differences in experimental design, interventions, study quality and proposed mechanisms make firm conclusions difficult. Mechanism remains one of the largest unresolved questions in the field.
None of these possibilities currently provides a scientifically established explanation for the Bengston Method.
An Important Distinction: Experimental Evidence vs. Medical Evidence
Perhaps the most important point is the distinction between interesting experimental findings and proven medical therapy.
The Bengston experiments are scientifically interesting precisely because some reported observations are unexpected.
But laboratory animal experiments are not equivalent to clinical evidence demonstrating that a therapy safely and reliably treats disease in humans.
For a method to become an accepted medical treatment, researchers would generally need increasingly rigorous studies, including independent replication, clearly defined protocols, appropriate controls and eventually well-designed human clinical trials.
That level of evidence does not currently exist for the Bengston Method.
The National Cancer Institute emphasizes that many complementary and alternative approaches lack sufficient evidence of safety and effectiveness as cancer treatments, even when preliminary research appears promising.
Similarly, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health advises people diagnosed with cancer to discuss complementary approaches with their healthcare providers and not use unproven methods as substitutes for established treatment.
What Makes the Bengston Method Worth Studying?
The most interesting aspect of Bengston’s work may not ultimately be whether it confirms traditional ideas about “healing energy.”
It is the larger scientific question it raises:
How much do we really understand about the interaction between consciousness, biology and healing?
Science progresses by investigating observations—including observations that initially appear improbable.
But scientific curiosity works best when accompanied by skepticism, replication and careful measurement.
The Bengston Method occupies exactly that territory.
There are laboratory findings interesting enough to justify further investigation, yet major unanswered questions remain regarding reproducibility, mechanism, clinical relevance and effectiveness in humans.
The Takeaway
The William Bengston Healing Method is an unconventional approach built around rapid Image Cycling combined with healing intention and hands-on or near-body interaction.
Rather than concentrating directly on illness, practitioners create and memorize numerous images representing fulfilled personal desires and learn to cycle through them extremely rapidly until the process becomes largely automatic.
Laboratory studies involving cancer models in mice have reported intriguing biological effects, including tumor-related and immune-related changes. However, the results across experiments have not been uniformly consistent, the mechanism remains unknown, and there is currently insufficient clinical evidence to regard the Bengston Method as a proven treatment for cancer or other diseases.
That does not mean the research should simply be dismissed.
It means it should be investigated with the same principle that drives good science everywhere:
Remain curious about what we don’t understand while being precise about what the evidence does—and does not—show.
